INTRAMURAL SPORTS

Appropriate Attire and Equipment Guidelines

The safety and well-being of all intramural sports participants is of paramount importance to our program. For all students to safely enjoy their participation in our intramural sports program we ask that each player be in appropriate attire and equipment. We kindly ask you to review and respect the guidelines outlined below as they are important in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all our students. We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. More information can be found at the University Recreation Website https://recreation.northeastern.edu/

Jewelry Policy

For your safety and that of your opponents, jewelry is not allowed to be worn by any participant during Intramural Sport contests in which players may come into contact with one another such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football and others. For non-contact sports and events like cornhole, cricket, softball, wiffleball, etc. – the removal of jewelry is recommended but not required.

The Intramural Staff has the responsibility to disallow any participant from wearing any equipment, jewelry, or apparel which in their judgment is dangerous or disadvantageous to other participants. This is a rule for the safety of all participants, including the wearer of such apparel, and applies to all dangerous equipment and jewelry.

For items that are medical or religious in nature, participants will have the option to remove the item of their own volition, or to cover the item with the provided tape and/or wristband. Please note that the University Recreation program cannot fully mitigate the risk of damage to any object that is worn during an intramural sports contest including items which are taped or covered with a sweat band.

Footwear

All participants must wear proper shoes. For the safety of all players metal cleats are not permitted. The Intramural Sports Staff may disallow any type of footwear deemed dangerous. Individual sports may have different shoe/footwear policies outlined in those sport specific rules. All facility policies regarding appropriate footwear must be adhered to as well.

Headgear

Hats with a hard brim are not allowed to be worn by any participant during intramural sports unless it is a sport that traditionally allows such items like softball, kickball or wiffleball. Beanies or winter wool hats can be worn. Additionally, headwear that is religious or culturally significant (Yakama, Kippah, Hijab) can be worn provided that it be properly secured and reinforced to the body to minimize interference during play.

Additional Safety Information

NONE of the following are allowed to be worn by any participant during an Intramural event:

  • Street pants (jeans, khakis, etc.)
  • Bare feet
  • Baseball Hats
  • A guard, cast or brace made of hard and unyielding leather, plaster, pliable (soft) plastic, metal or any other hard substance – even if covered with soft padding – when worn on the elbow, hand, finger, wrist or forearm.
  • Bandanas (Except a headband no wider than 2 inches and made of nonabrasive, unadorned, single-colored cloth, elastic, fiber, soft leather or rubber may be worn. Rubber/cloth (elastic) bands may be used to control hair.)

Players and teams that are found to be in violation of this policy, and thus endangering the safety of all the participants, will be penalized with an UNSPORTSMANLIKE PENALTY assessed to the violating player and their team. The player will be removed until the equipment or jewelry in question is removed.
